Overalls—The Latest Fashion Trend for Spring 2010

What a coincidence that as International Overalls Day is approaching  (Nov 20th), Ralph Lauren's latest Spring 2010 Ready to Wear Collection, features none other then OVERALLS (Style.com).  I still have my vintage Levi's  overalls that I snagged off of ebay just waiting for a hem.  I promised my friend Niels, aka bibprofessor, that I would have them ready by the big day. 

 

 
 
So what’s the appeal? “I’ve always loved overalls because they are a uniform,” Jean Paul Gaultier explains. “And being true to myself, I love making something different out of them—cutting them in Levi’s denim but with a conical bra. I love to subvert a classic.”

Vintage Rhinestones

Blogging about the vintage enamel pins made me think about my collection of vintage rhinestone brooches.  I don't really get dressed up anymore and don't wear them.  But, when I did I would put them on my jacket lapel and would always, always get comments.   I decided to pull them out and share with you.

 

Oversize Flower Brooches

J Crew revived the flower pins last year with  Dulken and Derrick silk flower brooches.   Personally, I like the vintage enamel pins from the 60's and 70's, especially the red.  You can find them all over ebay and etsy for next to nothing.

Old Jewelry Books

When I decide to learn something, I usually just dive into it head first.  That's just the way I roll (my family cringes whenever I use that expression--it's too hip for me I guess).  So, when I decided to switch from sewing, to embroidery, to beading, to leather, to finally jewelry--as with everything else I do, I needed to read on it first and buy every book possible I can. 

I am not beyond classroom learning, I am just too restless anymore to sit in a class and 'play with others'.  I get distracted easily and usually end up doodling, daydreaming, texting or sometimes I just get up and leave.  Besides, I have already paid my dues, I have 6 years of schooling already (albeit in another field) but whatever, it's not going to happen anymore. 

My favorite books on any subject are old books.  I love the simplistic directions and pictures.  Not all the 'fluff' you find in the newer books.  I usually scour old book stores and ebay for my finds. 

 

I found this 1970's casting book on ebay.  It is basically a catalog of castings that you order then add the stones.   I love looking at what was 'in' back then.  Lots of zodiac stuff.

 

You Are Never Too Old For Carving Pumpkins

I had to post the pictures of my 'group' from our Halloween festivities last night.  It was good old fashioned, clean, cheap fun.  We had a great time but we missed Dad because he was working --(somebody has to make the money around here).

Like I said, he made a miraculous recovery.  But, I will vouch for him since I was his personal nurse and maid, he was pretty sick.  I am just so happy he's feeling better. 

 
Here's our actual, legit kid--she had a wonderful Halloween.  She loves being with her brothers and their girlfriends they are all very good to her.  Thanks kids!

Well it's on to Christmas for me.  I have my christmas carol CD's out ...
 

I Dream of A Genie Costume

Like I said, I make all the costumes every year for Halloween.  Family, friends, coworkers, you name it--for no other reason than I enjoy it.   Well, my daugther's costume is always the hardest and of course this year was no exception.  This one was a topper, a beading and tulle nightmare and about 30 hrs of work.  But, It's worth it because she loves them. 

Just a last minute try on this morning, so I thought I would post it. Tonight, she will be in full regalia!

The Honorable "Doni Lama"

Well, we have had the flu twice in our house so it's been a bit hectic to say the least.  Anyway, here's my son Donovan in his "Doni Lama" costume.  I make all the costumes every year-- along with all my other endeavors.  Somehow,I fit it in between washing my hands 100 times and keeping my son in 1 room.

Sorry, but these have to be the ugliest costumes I have ever seen.   Heidi Klum is the Queen of Halloween she goes all out every year with her over the top costumes.  I think they are based around her custom made fangs.

Reality TV--The New Lottery?

 

After watching the  "Balloon Boy" caper blow up (excuse the pun) in father Richard Heene's face,  I started to wonder why it has become so important for some to be famous?  I mean to actually go to such ricidulous measures to sacrifice your children and utilize millions of dollars of resources just to be on TV is just wrong.

Well, I think the reason is obvious.   Fame equals money and like the lottery if you hit it big then you are financially set for life, at least in the minds of some.   I guess the good old fashioned way of getting a job and working just isn't cutting it anymore. 

 

I think Balloon Boy was actually a blessing in disguise.  It made fools out of CNN, local news channels and everyone else that was glued to the TV watching a mylar spaceship filled with helium float in the air.  Maybe we have finally had enough!  

Watching little Falcon vomit on national TV is probably the lowest of low.

We have watched the disinegration of so many families and lives on TV that hopefully this has been a 'lightbulb' moment for everyone.  Enough is enough!  It's one things to watch adults go down the drain of despair, but to involve little children is just plain wrong.
